what is this procedure

Vasectomy

A vasectomy procedure is a safe and effective form of permanent birth control.

Our vasectomy services offer a reliable and less invasive approach to family planning. As an alternative to female tubal ligation, vasectomy is an excellent option, achieving a remarkable 99% prevention rate.

This procedure not only provides effective contraception but is also occasionally reversible, adding flexibility to your family planning decisions.

Vasectomy, or male sterilization is a common way of near permanent contraception. Ashley Cooper was likely the first to do modern day vasectomy on a dog in the 19th century.

Previously, vasectomies used to involve a big cut in the scrotal sac resulting in many complications. However, the success rate was good at about 95-99%. Since the introduction of no-scalpel vasectomy, acceptance has increased and complications have reduced significantly.

No scalpel vasectomy was developed and first performed in China by Dr. Li Shunqiang. The aim being to reduce the fear related to the incision along with increasing vasectomy use in China. Since then, his method has been the gold standard in male sterilization.

Preparation

You should be fully satisfied you do not want any more children and that your family is complete. Make sure to get a goodnight’s sleep the night before. It would be preferable to shave the scrotal area and get tight-fitting underwear.

Some patients may prefer to experience minimal feeling / anxiety during the procedure. These patients would be prescribed a sleeping tablet (pre-assessed) which should be taken 1 hour before the operation. If you take the sleeping pill, we advise that you do not drive and instead organise someone for drop off / pick up. In certain cases, patients may benefit from mild inhalation anesthesia, which would be administered if necessary.

Make sure you eat before coming in for the procedure.

It is advised not to do any vigorous activities for a day. However, if you have a desk job, you can go back to work the same day. You would be given paracetamol, a 3 day course of antibiotics if required.

Procedure

The procedure takes approx. 15-30 minutes. The room will be kept mildly warm, and relaxing music will be played.

After infiltration with local anaesthetic with a single small hole both the vas will be approached, the inside of the lumen burnt with a diathermy and would be continued for 2-3cms and then put back.

Same procedure will be done for the other side. After the operation, there will be an application of antibiotic gel and simple dressing. You will need to wear a  supportive tight underwear.

After Procedure

We will give you a semen collection kit. This part is important since you must undergo a minimum of 20 ejaculations before testing for semen. It is common after vasectomy for some sperm to be in the parts of the seminal vesicle/ prostate and therefore still be possible to impregnate.

The semen once obtained should be dropped off within 1 hour at your nearest labtest for urgent processing. You can resume regular sexual activity after 7-10 days. It is advised to take contraceptive precautions for up to 3 months or until your post-vas semen analysis shows no sperm in your given specimen.

Complications

There are some complications that you need to be aware of; infection, bleeding, vasectomy failure (1%), and very rarely chronic pain (0.2-0.5%).

Minor sperm sac(spermatocele) is common with open ended vasectomy however causes less pressure/pain symptoms. We do not use titanium clips for the vasectomy ends to prevent pressure build up and chronic pain (open ended technique).

Pricing

The price of a vasectomy is $490 and if mild inhalation analgesia (Penthrox) is required, the price would be $650.
