What to Expect During Your Vasectomy Procedure

Understanding what to expect during your vasectomy can help ease any anxiety and ensure that you feel prepared for the process. Below, we outline each step of the procedure, from preparation to post-operative care.

Getting Started

When you arrive at the clinic, our medical team will ensure that you’re comfortable and answer any last-minute questions you may have. Before beginning the procedure, you’ll change into a gown, and the doctor will review your medical history to make sure you’re ready for the vasectomy. The entire process typically takes about 30 minutes.

Anesthesia

To ensure the procedure is as comfortable and pain-free as possible, a local anaesthetic is administered to numb the scrotal area. You may feel a slight pinch during the injection, but within minutes the area will become completely numb. This means you’ll remain awake throughout the procedure but won’t feel any pain.

Small Puncture

Unlike traditional methods, a no-scalpel technique is used, which involves a small puncture (3mm – 5mm hole) in the skin of the scrotum. This approach is less invasive, resulting in minimal bleeding, reduced discomfort, and faster recovery times. The puncture is so small that no stitches are typically required.

Seal Close

Once the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) are accessed, they are cut, sealed, or tied to prevent sperm from entering the semen. The closure is done with either sutures or cauterization (sealing the ends using heat), depending on the method the doctor deems most suitable for you. This ensures that the sperm cannot travel to the semen and therefore cannot cause pregnancy.

Quick and Easy

The entire procedure is quick and easy, usually completed within 30 minutes. Thanks to the no-scalpel method, the time spent in the clinic is minimal, and the process itself is efficient. After the vas deferens are sealed, the small puncture will heal naturally without the need for stitches, reducing the risk of infection and promoting faster recovery.

Rest and Relax

After the procedure, you will be advised to rest and relax for the remainder of the day. Most patients are able to walk out of the clinic on their own, but it’s important to take it easy for 24-48 hours. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and exercise for about a week to ensure proper healing. You can return to work, provided it doesn’t involve physical exertion.

Swelling and mild discomfort are normal for a few days, and these can be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain relief. You will receive detailed post-operative care instructions, and follow-up visits will ensure that everything is healing as expected.

A vasectomy is a quick, simple, and minimally invasive procedure that provides a permanent solution for male contraception. With the no-scalpel method, your recovery time is shorter, and the process itself is straightforward and relatively pain-free. Rest assured that our experienced team will guide you through every step to ensure your comfort and a successful outcome.
